Director John Carney conceived the premise for Begin Once again several years before he began to write the screenplay in 2010.[two] The story was partly inspired by his ain experiences as a musician in a band,[2] and from his impression of the artists and repertoire (A&R) executives of record labels during the 1990s, which formed the basis of Dan's graphic symbol.[four] Carney wrote the script, which was initially titled Tin a Song Salve Your Life?, before he, Glen Hansard, and Gregg Alexander began writing the songs; he wanted "to work the music around the story, instead of the other way around."[four] The script'south fashion of featuring songs equally a natural element of the story was inspired past the 1954 Judy Garland musical picture show A Star Is Built-in, and is also employed in Carney's before picture One time (2007).[5] Carney first pitched the film in 2010 to filmmaker Judd Apatow, who produced the moving picture alongside Tobin Armbrust and Anthony Bregman whose production company Exclusive Media financed the pic's US$eight million budget.[ii]
Earlier casting Keira Knightley as Gretta, Carney considered casting a pop vocalist such as Adele in the principal function, every bit well as a number of other actresses including Scarlett Johansson, who was at one betoken attached to the project.[2] [vi] Knightley, who had never sung professionally before, prepared for the function past preparation with a vocal coach and learning how to play a guitar.[7] Marker Ruffalo was Carney's first choice for the function of Dan,[2] and agreed to star in the film afterwards Carney sent him the outset draft of the screenplay.[6] Singer Adam Levine was also the only person Carney considered casting every bit Dave, and won the role after talking with Carney over Skype and recording some dialogue as an audition;[eight] he declined to be paid for appearing in the moving-picture show.[9] Although he had had small interim parts on telly before, Begin Over again marked his get-go function in a pic.[8] Carney approached James Corden to appear in the flick after admiring Corden's performance in the pb part in a Broadway production of One Man, Ii Guvnors.[10]
Master photography of the moving picture began in New York City on July 2, 2012,[eleven] and lasted for 23 days.[12] Carney chose to film in Manhattan'south bottom known neighborhoods that would exist more recognizable to locals than tourists. Specific locations included Greenwich Village, the East Village, Times Foursquare, and Washington Foursquare Park.[13] [14] Rather than performing live during filming, the actors sang to pre-recorded tracks. In order to save coin on hiring a full coiffure and extras, some scenes—including one in Times Square—were shot late at night with a handheld camera.[2] The rooftop location near the Empire State Building is located at 28 W 36th St.[15] [16] [17] [xviii]
Carney's criticism of Knightley [edit]
During a series of interviews to promote his film Sing Street in 2016, Carney repeatedly criticized Knightley's performance and comportment while making Brainstorm Again. When asked nigh the critical reaction to Sing Street past The Independent, Carney responded unprompted that "it'south a pocket-sized personal movie with no Keira Knightleys in information technology. Information technology's really rewarding."[19] In the same interview, Carney also referred to her repeatedly as a model, despite the fact that Knightley had been working professionally as an actress since childhood, saying "I'll never make a film with supermodels again." He besides criticized her in an interview with Heyuguys.com, maxim, "I just think with Keira it was like request her to practise something that she could non exercise."[xx] Though he did non specifically proper noun Knightley, he did, in an interview with Den of Geek, say that his want to make Sing Street came from his "experience of working, let's face information technology, with a model on my last film".[21] Filmmakers Massy Tadjedin, Mark Romanek, Lorene Scafaria and Lynn Shelton, who had worked with Knightley on other films, tweeted their support for her afterwards Carney's comments.[22]
Carney afterwards tweeted a public amends saying he felt like "a complete idiot" and maxim that Knightley was "zippo just professional and defended" during the filming of the movie.[23]
In 2019, when asked about Carney's comments, Knightley accepted his amends and revealed that she was non shocked by his earlier comments as they had not gotten along during filming.[24] [25]
